You might need xcode and command-line tools, but brew's setup will check all that for you. PS. echo $CC if it was, then this should fix your problem: unset CC rvm remove 1.9.3 rvm install 1.9.3 if it still does not work then show me: rvm install 1.9.3 x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu checking host system type...
