No, the IP address in client_state.xml is the IP address of your computer, not the localhost default address 127.0.0.1 The BOINC binary and the BOINC Manager binary do talk to each Ubuntu 12.04, repository 7.0.27, starting Boinc manager from a gui startup folder. Reinstalling didn't work, either. By default this file isn't made until either you make it, or you add exceptions through BOINC Manager's advanced preferences menu.

You're problem could be related with mine, but I have no way to determine.
So I stop the manager and restart. Does this on two computers so far. I just tried on another debian box and it works without password as you said. Xfce?

I checked the documentation that came with the boinc-client package (something like SUSEREADME) and followed the instructions: I typed "localhost" and then the password that resides in Code: /var/lib/boinc/ gui_rpc_auth.cfg .
from the Boinc Manager menu. * Put "localhost" in for "Host name" and the contents of /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg for "Password" and hit "OK". Didn't help. Also creates links from this directory to the files in /etc/boinc-client 4. Only Mac users will know what words to look for.
