Now I can't edit or save any files to my external hard drive, which I used with my PC. The external disks box is checked on finder preferences. You should know that when I select the drive in Disk Utility it does seem like my data is there. It chaps me that the computer world does not have a standard format. That will probably show it needs reformatting (and possibly repartioning). External Hard Drive Not Showing Up In Disk Utility Interestingly, the data part of the partitioned drive is now MS-DOS (FAT) instead of OS X Extended.Does this make a difference to my options? So I have no idea where to go from here.... But the larger drives...?

In order to format the drive please open Mac OS X Utilities -> Disk Utility -> choose the drive -> Partition tab -> 'Format:' field. When I connect the drive to Mac, a pop-up window prompts if I want to connect the drive whether to Mac or to Windows - I choose Windows.
Utilities > Disk Utility can't fix it. The time now is 02:59 AM. Any idea what cud be the problem and what can i do to get my HD detected in disk utility? Mac Not Detecting External Hard Drive I'd reformat them in FAT 32.

Many thanks, Nigel. It does not address hardware problems and is unlikely to recover data when hardware is the cause of the problem. The most likely cause that you don't see it is that it isn't formatted any more. These drives mostly contain .m4p and m4v files.
