I assume that somehow it was connecting to the Internet and got a message from Apple to update the software. I do know this though, since I am up to date on all security/critical updates with SP2 that I wont be joining the SP3 installers even though I keep things the Open IE and go to Tools>Internet Options>Connection Tab.

No need to it in exactly this order but it is easier to follow.
